Padua freshman bowler Zachary Mayne ’28 had a record-breaking day, en route to winning the OHSAA Division I Bowling State Championship at the H.P. Lanes Bowling Center in Columbus on Saturday, March 8, 2025.
Mayne broke the state record for a high series at the State Championships, regardless of division, with an 858 series (279-279-300). Additionally, Mayne set the record with a perfect 300 game in the third and final game of the tournament.
“It felt amazing,” Mayne said of winning the State Championship. “Going into this, I didn’t know what to expect. I was hoping to at least make Top 15, just try and make the All-Tournament Team. I didn’t expect to come out here, get first and have state records. It’s just awesome.”
In 36 frames of competition, Mayne threw 34 strikes. He missed only two pins in two frames over the entire tournament. In a field of 105 competitors, Mayne won the State Championship by 119 pins.
“It was just awesome,” said Mayne, who now has eight 300 games on his resume. “I’m just speechless about that. I didn’t expect to do anything this amazing.”
Being a freshman, Mayne looks forward to competing at the State Championships in future years. He believes the record-setting start to his Padua career sets a high bar for future postseason appearances.
“I think it adds a little bit of excitement,” Mayne said with a wry smile.
