Padua Finishes Runner-Up at State Figure Skating Championships

Padua Franciscan High School’s Figure Skating Team placed second at the Ohio High School Team Figure Skating Championship on Sunday, February 1, 2026 at Thornton Park in Shaker Heights.

The team performed to music from Wicked. (The numbers are judged on illustration of character, music interpretation, costuming and audience appeal.)

Overall, the Bruins won 17 medals. Senior Ella Ruminski ’26, senior Isabella Higgins ’26 and junior Addalyn Schmidt ’27 were Padua’s top high school skaters.

“To be a part of the Padua’s Figure Skating team family means a lot to me,” said Ruminski, who serves as one of the team’s captains. “I love the community and how everybody is individually talented and together we bring an amazing performance to the ice each and every year.”

Higgins, a fellow captain, who played the role of Glinda, has been a part of Padua’s skating program for six years, since she was in seventh grade. “I have grown so much as a skater and person,” said Higgins. “I have seen how dedication you can take so far. I am so grateful to have been a part of something so special.”

Many skaters expressed gratitude for their coaches and staff. “They all have worked so hard to be there for us and guide us,” said Schmidt. “Our team manager Lori always goes above and beyond to make our costumes and props. I am grateful for all of that hard work and dedication.”

Alexandria (Miranda) Babb ‘11 and Alexis (Hipkins) Flinn ‘10 are the head coaches, and have been part of the successful program since its inception in 2007, along with team manager Lori Margevicius. Allison (Margevicius) Vega ’10 and GraceAnn Demarest, a former skater with Disney on Ice, are the assistant coaches. Rachel Gray serves as the production assistant.

Along with its fifth runner-up finish, the Bruins have won 12 state championships in school history. Past championship years include: 2024, 2023, 2022, 2019, 2018, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2011, 2010 and 2008.

The Figure Skating team will continue its season with the following events: Kent Competition (March 7–8), the Michigan Showcase (March 12–15), and the Cleveland Invitational Classic at Michael A Ries Rink (March 21–22).
